Keeping the Flame of Tradition Alive: The Kannawidan Festival as a Showcase of Ilocano Customs and Values
Kannawidan Festival is a cultural celebration held in the province of Ilocos Sur in the Philippines. This festival is a tribute to the province's rich history and cultural heritage, and it is celebrated annually on January 29. The word "Kannawidan" is derived from the Ilocano word "nawidan," which means to inherit. The festival aims to promote and preserve the Ilocano culture by showcasing the traditions and customs that have been passed down from generation to generation.
I was amazed when we went to the Kannawidan trade fair. The Kannawidan Festival features a trade fair, where visitors can purchase traditional handicrafts and products. There are also food fairs, where visitors can sample some of the local delicacies and specialties. Although the venue for the kannawidan was much smaller than before. Of course, a large number of people go there to see the various products that each municipality is proud of. Apart from the trade fair, The festival also has cultural events with a grand parade of floats, showcasing various aspects of Ilocano culture. There are also street dances, cultural presentations, and beauty pageants, all of which highlight the beauty and uniqueness of Ilocano traditions. It’s just sad that I wasn't able to watch those shows because most of them are held during night time.
Overall, the Kannawidan Festival is a vibrant and colorful celebration of Ilocano culture. It is a great opportunity for locals and tourists alike to learn about our province's rich history and to appreciate the customs and traditions that have been passed down through the generations.
